RUMBEK, WAS ONCE A MAGNIFICENT PLACE! NOW A HAVEN FOR REVENGE KILLINGS.

The
bullet hit right into his skull; he collapsed onto the ground. He glared
fixedly at his assailant; if he were alive, his first question would be,
"you have wounded me; what have I done to you, my dear bother?" but
his lifeless body lay stretched on the ground, eyes fixed towards the goon as
if he would plead not to be reshot, Alas! He is gone; he died for the wrong he
didn't do. The attacker turned his back, swung Kalashnikov's Automatic
Rifle over his shoulder, and walked away in broad daylight. And nothing
happened, no arrest, no one even pursued him, but all you would hear were
children and women wailing on top of their voices, asking God what they had
done to deserve that. A few hours later, it's reported that Mr X was shot and
killed by an unknown gunman.
This is just a daily phenomenon in my beloved hometown, villages, roads, and bushes with no reference to anyone. We have
subjected ourselves to suffering, fear, and hatred, which once had not to place
in the hearts of the Agaar people. You only thank God when you live to see the
rising sun the next day and thank God when you finish the day as you watch the
sun going down. "Are you from Rumbek?" is the first question people
ask when they hear my Dinka Agaar accent. "Why are you doing all these to
yourselves?" the second question follows. I am always enthusiastic
to answer the first question, holding my nose up with pride. Still, my
confidence and satisfaction with being an Agaar were quickly killed by the
second question about what we have subjected ourselves to, which is untold
suffering. All I do is hang my head in shame and tell them it's something
beyond "Human" understanding, assuring them that our glory will be
restored someday.
Indeed, what is happening is being catalyzed by
rumor-mongers; and believed by fools. They quickly pick it up from the lips of
those seeing the seeds of hatred. And shoot an innocent person with an AK-47.
It all starts like this, "so and so was shot dead yesterday by "pan
wendtei Ku pan wendtei" (clans so and so together with clan so and so).
Just because some clans are believed to have unresolved issues among themselves
makes rumor mongers create a justification. The cycle goes on and on and on.
This confirmed the dictum: "RUMOURS ARE CARRIED BY HATTERS, SPREAD BY
FOOLS, AND ACCEPTED BY IDIOTS."
Until we learn to live in peace and harmony, we will perish
in pieces like fools, ask me what's on my mind, and I can tell you without fear
that our reputation is badly damaged.
