The Worse Place to Be a Donkey: A Cry for Compassion

Image
A Tale of Cruelty and the Urgent Need for Change By: Abraham Daljang Maker Renk, a small town nestled on the banks of the Nile River in South Sudan's Upper Nile State, is where you would never wish to be a donkey if at all one chooses what you should be. Curelity treatment of donkeys is everywhere despite the town's seemingly peaceful façade. Here, donkeys, once considered noble and hardworking creatures, endure unimaginable suffering and cruelty. In a place where empathy seems to have faltered, their existence has become synonymous with pain and neglect. Every day at the break of dawn, the streets of Renk come alive with the sound of hooves pounding against the muddy ground. These donkeys, their spirits broken and bodies burdened, carry heavy water carts to fulfil the basic needs of the town's inhabitants, who heavily rely on buying water from the river Nile where Donkeys are used to fetch water. It is in this task that their agony unfolds as they face relentless b...

THE DANGER OF SOCIAL BLINDNESS AND DEAFNESS.

THE DANGER OF SOCIAL BLINDNESS AND DEAFNESS. By: Abraham Daljang Maker Being deaf or blind socially has nothing to do with the natural way of impairment; it’s something that humanity has suffered since its creation. Have you ever heard of the famous phrase, “He/she turned a deaf ear or turned a blind eye?” if yes, then you must know what I am insinuating. We tend to shut our ears or eyes to external voices regarding issues that matter to our emotional well-being. Be it career choices, taking or leaving a job, social or romantic relationships, businesses and many more, in most cases, make us deaf or blind to hear external voices or see the external environment. Before you choose that course to study, that business to begin, that job to apply for or resign from, and before you decide to commit to that romantic relationship being social or ideological, there are those voices you hear. These voices come from experienced individuals who have learned their lessons. Or that voices that come f...

RESPECT THEM AS THEY WOULD

RESPECT THEM AS THEY WOULD It has never crossed my mind and I doubt if I will ever do it. The line between traditional media where journalists were(are) the watch dogs and the custodians of accurate information and the current trend of social media where everyone owns unverified information and breaks the news at any moment, is totally blurred. Come to think about it, why would one take a picture of a deceased and post it on social media? Why rush with half baked information even when the loved ones of the passed on person haven't yet got the information? Even if it's a full baked information per se, do we have a permission from the relatives or the right to publish it? Have we ever thought of putting ourselves into the shoes of the person who is gone? What if he/she were alive, or suddenly resurrects, do you think he/she would appreciate us for publishing their obituary? Do we even know the ethics of publishing the obituary? Do we really know the harm and the pai...

COWS HAVE BECOME THE SYMBOLS OF DOOM IN OUR CULTURE.

Cows have become the symbols of doom in our culture.   By: Abraham Daljang Maker They are just four legged animals which we should have been using wisely for our equitable economic benefits and to enhance better living as pastoralists communities; instead, they have enslaved us all. The victims of this enslavement are our sisters, daughters, aunts and cousins who are being subjected to torture by greedy individuals who see their daughters and sisters as assets rather than human being who deserve respect and dignity, what a tragedy?  I was dumbfounded by the news of a 20 year old girl who was killed in Yirol by her brothers for refusing to accept an arranged marriage to a man she didn’t love or perhaps she wasn’t ready to get married to any man for that matter. I first disregarded it as social media fake news until I saw it in one of the credible sources. I was skeptical about the authenticity of the news not because it couldn’t happen but because I couldn’t believe...

A TALE OF AN ORPHAN, THE ONLY CHILD THAT LIVES!

I DIDN’T SEE YOU, BUT THEY SAY; YOU WERE A GREAT MAN. #WorldPoetryDay A tale of an orphan, the only child that lives! It’s haunts me, day and night yet I have no slightest hint of how you look. You left when I was barely five, you never say goodbye. Of course, how would you, to a 4-year-old child? How would, you when you were struggling with your last breath? Come, try to come today if it were possible and I won’t recognize you that you’re my father because, when you left this world, my eyes weren’t opened, my ears were closed, and my brain was too young to comprehend. The say that you were a great man. My mother (your wife) says it, my grandmother (your mother) says it, my aunts (your sisters) say it. the public who knew you say it. The say, you were a great man. I am trying, to keep the boat moving, the boat that you left floating on the waters. I know that you didn’t want to leave the boat, but death won’t allow you to do so. I am rowing it day and night to make s...
